As we studied the parable of the Lost Sheep this year, we became aware that it would be no use the shepherd rushing off and rescuing the lost sheep unless there was a place for the sheep to be brought back – a safe nurturing place where a sheep (or a ewe) would want to remain, where he or she would receive the food and company they needed, and where they in turn could lend a hand to others on the edge. That place would have been among the ninety-nine sheep who could be left to take responsibility for themselves: that place was the parish community we realised.
And that group in itself would need to be nurtured, to develop as disciples, able to hear the word of the Shepherd and act on it. We realized that we were already involved in this building process to a great extent in our Thursday morning Eucharist and get-together, which is attended by Christians from all the churches, and so we have decided to focus this already-happening group, as The Ninety niners, which has its arms open to welcome anyone who turns up.
The Format
Thursday 10.30 am Eucharist followed by coffee and, for anyone who wants to stay on, a study of the Bible passage we have heard. This will be rounded off with a time of prayer together to focus on our needs and the needs of the community and to develop our capacity to hear God as he speaks to us. All to be completed by 12 noon.
